PHIVOLCS: Mayon Volcano in Near to Eruption, Alert Level Raises to 4 - Video

BREAKING: PHIVOLCS raises Alert Level 4 over Mayon Volcano after volcanic activity and smoke out from it on January 22, 2018.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised alert level 4 over Mayon Volcano in Albay on Monday.

The alert level warns of an imminent hazardous eruption — possibly within days.

Level 5 is the highest warning, which means a hazardous eruption is taking place.

The agency reported "increased seismic unrest, lava fountaining, and summit explosions" in the area.

The danger zone is extended to eight kilometers, PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum told CNN Philippines.

"The public is reminded to observe the danger zone — not to panic, but in essence just be ready. Prepare either gas masks, handkerchiefs or clothes to prevent inhalation of fine ash," said Solidum.

PHIVOLCS also advised civil aviation authorities to make sure pilots avoid flying close to the summit, as the ash is hazardous to aircraft.
